Where all these WebP files come from

Most big sites now serve WebP because it is smaller than JPEG — so when you save an image from the web, WebP is what lands in your downloads folder, whatever the page visually showed you. CDNs even convert on the fly: the site owner uploaded a JPG, your browser received a WebP.

That is fine until the file meets software from before the WebP era — older Photoshop, embroidery and print software, digital photo frames, or the stricter kind of upload form. Converting back to JPG is the universal escape hatch, and doing it locally means the image is never bounced through someone else's server on the way.
